The Bright Years Book Club Guide

Sarah Damoff's The Bright Years is a family story about love, addiction, grief, secrets, inherited wounds and hope.

It's also the kind of novel that gives a book club plenty to talk about: how we understand the people we love, what families keep from one another, what gets passed down and what we have the power to change.

I created a free companion guide with discussion questions, themes to explore, and a few books to read next.

A few questions to start the conversation:

  1. How did your feelings about the characters change as you saw events from different perspectives?

  2. How does the novel complicate the idea of someone being a “good” or “bad” person?

  3. Were there characters whose choices you strongly disagreed with, but whose motivations you could still understand?

  4. What do you think the novel says about the difference between loving someone and being able to save them?
